My name is Chad, I am a 43-year old divorced dad living in Los Angeles raising a 5-year old daughter. I am a self-employed photographer who is struggling to balance my workload and my custody time with my daughter. I would like some Mens Health advice a couple things.
First, my family health history is associated with diabetes. Do you have any health tips on this subject? In addition, I am on the road a lot and often need to find some quick exercise routines to keep myself in shape. Can you recommend any for the commuter like me?
As a divorced dad with full time commitment to parenting and career; I can relate to your scenario. Your commitment to your custody time is admirable, but let’s keep your diabetes health in check. Stick to these four ways to keep your diabetes in check:
4 Ways to Debunk Diabetes:
- Relax: Stress and anxiety can cause inflammation, sending your body into an insulin tsunami. Focus on your relaxation and try Yoga or meditation. Something as easy as breath relaxation techniques is a proven way to cleanse your body away from the stress that can cause inflammation.
- Get up to 8 hours of sleep. Something about the power of a restful night of sleep has proven to keep lower insulin levels in men who get a minimum of 8 hours of sleep per night. I know this is not easy for the divorced dad with custody; however, make it an effort!
- Bike it Out. Take up biking. Cycling, or other levels of cardiovascular exercise for men 40 and over has proven to lower incidence of type 2 diabetes.
- Cook with Vegetable Oils. Men with high blood levels of linoleic acid, (found in nuts, seeds and many vegetable oils) are less likely to become diabetic.
Men’s Fitness: The Squat
The perfect exercise is sometimes in the simplicity. I have re-discovered the art of the squat and have found amazing results in my overall fitness “on the go”. Sitting in the squat position is the most natural movement for the body and a perfect way to exercise.
Stand up, kick your shoes off. Spread your feet hip-width apart with your toes pointing straight forward. Now squat. Go as low as you can go without raising your heels off the floor or slump forward. Don’t let your butt touch the ground and then slowly ascend back up to a standing position.
Repeat 10 times.
