How To Be A Better Dad: Budgeting

How To Be a Better Dad is the fatherhood and co-parenting section on SingleDad. Share and exchange great fatherhood advice from our members who are in all stages of fatherhood. Our topic this month is learning how to budget.

Dear SingleDad,

I have 3 children and I am going through a divorce. The divorce has changed so many things including money. I had a set plan before, but now I’m back to figuring out how to budget again. Any advice?

-Eli, 37

Divorce does create so many changes and financial stress. Today’s article will provide you some advice to help with your budgeting!

  • Planning

You said you had a set plan before and you can always do that again. Write expenses that you have. What are the expenses that you absolutely need to pay for? And what are not? Electricity is a must but maybe you can delete your amazon prime subscription for now.

  • Therapy

On top of financial stress, I imagine emotional stress comes with it. Seeing a therapist can provide support and can help you create a plan. For some people budgeting is a struggle due to emotional stress.

  • Accountant

It may not be ideal, but if you have connections or a friend who does accounting for a living they could help keep track of your finances. If they’re not willing to do that for free, the next best thing they could offer is advice.

I hope this article can help, you are able to find support, and find a plan that works for you. Financial struggles are not permanent especially when we work on fixing that struggle. Good luck through the whole process! Thanks for writing to SingleDad.
