How To Be a Better Dad: Anti-vaccine or Pro?

How To Be a Better Dad is the fatherhood and co-parenting section on SingleDad. Share and exchange great fatherhood advice from our members who are in all stages of fatherhood. Today you’ll learn how to choose the best medical choice for your children.

Dear SingleDad, I’m a father to 5 great kids. My oldest is 12 and my youngest is 6. My kids received their necessary vaccinations, but I’m having trouble deciding if this new vaccine for COVID-19 is necessary. Could you give me some cause and affects please?

-Emmett, 43

Emmett, it’s great you’re thinking through medical decisions for your children rather than jumping right into doing whoever says what is best. Certain things the parents really only know.

  • How can you really decide what is best and trust you made the right choice?

All five of your children are different ages, different people, with different reactions. One of your children may be allergic to a laundry detergent, one may be allergic to peppers, one may be sensitive to smells, and the other two may have no reactions to anything or very little. Consulting with their primary doctor can help navigate the best option. Searching for multiple opinions from different doctors is a smart move as well.

  • Do your research

Searching for multiple opinions is a part of that, but also form your own opinion by following up with articles. How long has the vaccine been available? Who has had the vaccine given to them? What are the side effects? Now, it’s hard to find accurate feedback. You can’t believe everything you see on the internet, so use reliable sources. Again, multiple sources is a smart move.

  • Be mindful

There is a new reality to the world now to keep ourselves and those around us safe from COVID-19. We were ordered to be put into quarantine, we must wear masks, sanitize, be tested for the virus if we choose to, stay so many feet apart, etc.  If you and your family are mindful of this new reality and taking precautions, that can help in major ways to keep you all healthy.

Good luck, stay healthy, and safe!
