Fitness For Dads: GNC’s New Plant-Based Proteins

Keeping up our health to give our best either at work, with
our kids, or even at the gym is so important, and protein plays a vital role in
maintaining energy, strength, and endurance in our day-to-day activities. Protein is vital when it comes to
building muscles as well as keeping you full throughout the day.

Now I’ll be honest that I love a good burger or juicy steak,
but we just can’t eat that way every day.
So when it comes to planning meals or getting proper dietary intake with
my busy schedule, I’m always looking for healthy, effective protein supplements
that also taste good!

Plant-Based Protein?

I’ve tried a few plant-based proteins, which are good if you
follow a vegetarian, vegan, or clean-eating diet to support lean muscle growth
and total body health. Unlike casein, whey, and other types of animal based
protein supplements, plant based proteins come from a variety of sources
including brown rice, hemp, pea and soy proteins.

Power of Plant Protein

Plant-Based Protein
Varieties

  • Brown
    rice protein
is not a complete or whole protein, but is often paired with
pea protein to complete the amino acid profile.
  • Hemp
    protein
has essential fatty acids like omega-3, omega-6, and is low in saturated
    fats.
  • Pea
    proteins
are commonly high in amino acids lysine and arginine and while it
tastes good, is also a great supplement for vegans and vegetarians.
  • Soy
    protein
also provides critical amino acids and is very low in fat.

PUREDGE Complete Vegan
Protein

I recently tried GNC’s PUREDGE Complete Vegan protein, which
is their first plant-based protein that has 20 grams of protein per serving, 10
grams of amino acids, and has powerful whole-food-based blends that target
vital core body systems. It blends five different plant based protein sources
and lacks artificial flavors, sweeteners, and colors.

The Verdict?

While it comes in both chocolate and vanilla flavors, I
tried the vanilla option. Mixed
with Silk’s Vanilla Coconut Milk, I must say it tasted really good for a
plant-based protein! It had a good texture like a real shake. I felt increased
energy throughout the day and a sense of fullness so I’m not reaching for those
greasy burgers at lunch time (as good as they are). Canisters of protein can be had for $59.99 as a GNC member,
