Fitness for Dads:
Seed Power

My name is Troy and I’m a 50 year old single dad from Los Angeles
with my two year old son who runs circles around me, leaving me feeling
exhausted at the end of the day. I
go to the gym to get some of my energy back, but I drag my feet walking in the
door and hardly have the strength to get through a decent workout. Is there anything I can add to my diet
that is quick and easy but will give me energy throughout the day and at the
gym?

Toddler Tired Troy

Low On Energy

Dear Tired by Toddler,

Oh yes, the toddler years. I remember them well.
Once they learn to walk, it time to put on your marathon shoes. Chasing a toddler around all day can
leave anyone feeling wiped out.
There’s nothing worse than going to the gym, ready to get your pump on
and then a few minutes later you are ready to throw in your sweat towel. That
will make your results take twice as long and kill your motivation.

What are your eating before your workouts? Chances are if you are losing energy in
the middle of your workouts, you aren’t giving your body the fuel to produce
the energy it needs to get through a workout.

If you are like most parents with a toddler, you are
probably limited in the amount of time you have to prepare a meal. One of the best ways to get a quick
meal packed with the energy you need to get through a workout is make yourself
a smoothie.

Smoothie Power

From energizing fruit and alkalizing vegetable smoothies to
protein packed peanut butter smoothies, you can quickly make and consume many
of your daily requirements in just one sitting.

The beauty of a smoothie is they aren’t just for
lunchtime. Instead of your caramel
frappucino and lemon pound cake for breakfast, consider a spiced, caramel
banana smoothie with soymilk and yogurt.
Smoothies can also make delicious replacements to dinner-time
meals. Put down that pizza and opt
for a spinach smoothie with avocado and apple instead.

Quick and Easy Energy

Want to really pack your smoothie with more nutrients in one
swig then some people get in a whole days worth of food? Add the magical power of seeds. With these tiny powerhouses, you’ll not
only get more bang for your buck, but a whole host of other nutritional
benefits that will eave you reaping their rewards for hours on end. Endurance enhancers, efficient fat
burners and protein enriched, seeds are one of the easiest and most convenient
foods to add to your diet.

There are a wide variety of seeds to choose from, but here
are the seeds that will give you the most bang for your buck.

Best Seeds for Energy

Chia Seeds

Chia Seeds

Opting for a chia seed smoothie, packed with 360 milligrams
of calcium in only 2 ounces instead of an expensive pre-workout drink, will
give you the endurance you need to power through your workout.

Hemp Seeds

Hemp Seeds

Though actually considered a nut, they are one of the only
foods found in nature to be a complete protein. Containing nine essential amino acids, hemp seeds can help
fight inflammation and boost your immune system.

Flaxseed

Flax Seed

Want an easy fat burning solution? Add some flaxseed to your diet. Packed with omega-3’s, consuming a daily serving of one
tablespoon of flaxseed, will rev up your bodies fat burning furnace and help
you burn fat more efficiently throughout the day.

Pumpkin Seeds

Pumpkin Seeds

During an intense workout, minerals get depleted. Pumpkin seeds will not only replace
vital minerals such as iron, but help you to maintain your muscles with high
levels of vitamin E and magnesium.

While you may need mealtime to be more convenient and
affordable, you don’t have to sacrifice your nutrition to get it. Eat a handful of seeds or just simply
throw them into your smoothie and wa-la, instant and sustainable
nutrition.

Hopefully in no time at all, you will be running circles
around your toddler.
