Ask SingleDad: How To Be A Better Dad
How To Be An Involved Divorced Dad
Question: I am not looking for legal
advice on divorce, but more for general tips on how to be the best dad possible now that I no longer live
with my children. What have other
divorced dads done to keep up the best relationship possible with their kids
whom they do not live with or even see on a regular basis?
Answer from Cordell & Cordell men’s
divorce lawyer Jamie Kinkaid:
Beyond
basic visitation, constant contact with a child is a necessity. Whether it is
nightly Skype calls, letters, email, or telephone, making sure you keep
repeated and frequent contact is an absolute must. Stay active and join websites, like SingleDad.com and learn
from some of the members here.
Divorced
dads who maintain an active role in their children’s lives reap the benefits
now and later on. When a dad exits a child’s life or just drifts away through
inertia, a child will feel rejected. Unlike physical pain, a child will
experience this pain over and over again during his childhood. Even
out-of-state dads with limited parenting time are still far better for a child
than not having a father in the picture at all.
For those divorced dads who live in different
states from their children, setting up extended visitations, including extended
summers and parenting time over other school breaks and holidays, is also a
necessity.
