New research links the importance of having a Father present in a child’s life and the delinquency rates later in life..Divorced Dad and Child Custody articles on SingleDad
People have generally known for years that when a child grows up in a single-parent home, he or she faces challenges and difficulties that those children with both parents present do not tend to face. However, researchers continue to study this issue in an attempt to identify problems before they arise so that steps can be taken to minimize the harm endured by children in this situation. A recent study was conducted with this in mind, and it yielded at least one rather surprising result.
Specifically, researchers in Australia used data from the United States to analyze how often children who grew up without a father in the home tended to encounter trouble as they grew older. This trouble generally consisted of delinquent behavior that included criminal trouble, trouble at school and general risk-taking leanings that were not present in children who had both parents in their homes.
The study concluded that adolescent boys tended to engage in delinquent behavior at a much higher rate than their counterparts who had their fathers present. Surprisingly, though, the study concluded that girls whose fathers were not present in the home did not tend to engage in delinquent behavior at an appreciably higher rate than their two-parent counterparts. Experts have yet to offer much in the way of theories that would help to explain these findings.
