Family Traditions: Playing Records and Dominos

This month’s family post is about my springtime family
traditions. As the weather begins to heat up and the homework seems to get done
sooner in the afternoon than usual, a busy Dad like me looks for positive and
constructive ways to keep my daughters busy and away from their smartphones and
the internet.

Sometimes, the best way to do this is to reintroduce the
things I did when I was young and bring back some of my favorite family
traditions. As a young teen, I can remember listening to my records and playing
a variety of card games and dominos with my parents for hours on end.

It’s a good thing I kept a majority of my favorite LP’s over
the years. I have since updated my turntable and have taken much better care of
some my favorite classic LP’s of the 70’s, 80′ and early 90’s. One of my favorite
records playing when I was younger was, "The Beach Boys, Endless Summer". This
LP was a Southern California staple in most households growing up in the mid
70’s and it was the most popular record played with my surfing buddies, (that’s
me in the picture, far LEFT; San Clemente State Beach 1976).

Over the years, our card games as a family have evolved to
playing dominos. Dominos is a great game to play because it incorporates a
little math skill and a lot of luck to finish on top. My daughters like to play
my records and have a few hours around the dining room table playing a game of
dominos with me.

Anyways, on this particular spring evening, I broke out
"Endless Summer" LP and played a 3- hour round of dominos with my wife and two
daughters. If you are not familiar with the game, here are a few quick steps on
how we like to play:

  • For a group of 4, each must have 9 dominos.
  • The person who has the "double six" starts the
    game
  • Only the first "double" domino can be played
    from all four corners
  • To make a move your end must match the end of
    another domino
  • Points are accumulated in increments of 5 ( 5,
    10, 15, 20)
  • If a player cannot make a play, skip a turn or
if there is extra domino called the "bone yard" take a domino and skip a turn.
  • Person who gets rid of their entire domino gets
to keep the accumulation of the others and goes first on the next round.
  • Play to 250 points

Original Hershey Tradition

Even though we began our traditional family time playing
card games, my daughters have evolved on making Dominos our new family
entertainment of choice. Just like these changes, did you know that the founder
of HERSHEY’S Chocolates, Milton Hershey began his business making and selling
caramels? That’s right, before chocolate was brought to mainstream America;
Milton Hershey founded his career making caramel treats that were popular on
the East Coast. The candy market grew and peaked around the late 1800’s but
Milton Hershey had the foresight to keep his recipes and move onto the next
chapter in his candy business.

The Caramel Tradition Continues Today

During the 1800’s the widespread use and consumption of
caramels peaked and fell. There was still a demand for candy products and
Milton Hershey was working on a new product that would change the history of
candy. Milton had discovered the necessary manufacturing
techniques to produce milk chocolate on a large scale. The demand for
mainstream milk chocolate grew and the rest is the history of HERSHEY’S
Chocolates.

Chocolate Caramels

Today, you can find the rich, creamy taste of HERSHEY’S
Caramels in their new, bite size treats. There are both dark and milk chocolate
covered caramels to choose from. These treats are the perfect size for me
during my family time at home playing dominos with my daughters. My wife Beth,
just wanted to go on the record to admit that the dark chocolate caramels go
perfect with red wine.

As a parent, I feel good about giving these treats to my
daughters because they come in a manageable, portion size. I also feel good
about HERSHEY’S Chocolates and their efforts to become more aware of today’s
consumer who wants to be more informed on the manufacturing process of food
products. Click HERE to learn about Shared

In Summary

Sometimes going back in time and doing the things that are
fun is a good thing. My records and domino games have withstood the test of
time and keep my "family time" simple, fun and grounded, (without the use
internet or smartphones).
